One simple word can usually have several meanings. Some however are viewed as only positive or negative. This week at work I experienced both in the same day.
A coworker of mine is known as being "really smart" in the library world. Known for his computer knowledge and research abilities, he truly is an asset to the staff. I know without a doubt that he is FAR more knowledgeable than me in most subjects. He recently made a sign that said idiot. When someone asks a particularly silly question (at least to him) he holds it up. Let me assure you that the person never knows what he has done. Well I became the brunt of the joke when I had a question about our color copier. In my defense another coworker didn't know the answer either. As soon as I asked the question up went the sign. I laughed, he laughed, but it still stung a little.
That same day I helped two women about my age. Each of them were attempting to enter the work force after staying at home to raise their children. I encouraged them, told them of my experiences and gave them some information on updating their technical skills. They both called me an angel. Quite different from my encounter earlier in the day.
I tell you these stories to simply say that words matter. Webster's Dictionary defines word as a unit of language, consisting of one or more spoken sounds or their written representation, that functions as a principal carrier of meaning . That is a mouthful. Simply put words have meaning so use them carefully. Now let me assure you that I know I am not an idiot and I am certainly not an angel. That day did reinforce what I already knew. Words can hurt or heal. They can make your day or ruin it. Used correctly they encourage and used maliciously a word can destroy the spirit.
Words...use them carefully.
Blessings!

He should rethink his actions...!
ReplyDeleteI have known people who were extremely "book smart" and very high IQ's, but had no common sense and was totally void of "common courtesy". I was married to one - Nuff said.
Enjoy your weekend.
Meant to add - Thank you for helping the 2 ladies entering the work force. People like that need all the encouragement they can get now days. The job market is really bad right now. You are an angel for working with them. I feel sure they will remember you.

You definitely know much more than your co-worker.
