A Berry Good Summer

Summer is officially here and in Mrs. DD land that means that the berries are here! Strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries are all showing up in abundance. The past few days my kitchen has been in jam production mode. I just LOVE homemade jam. My husband and I enjoy it every morning on toast or biscuits. During those cold Winter months I am so thankful for the time spent preserving during the hot Summer months. :-)

Several months ago I saw Rachel Saunders on an episode of the Martha Stewart Show. She was promoting her book, The Blue Chair Jam Cookbook. I can't recommend this book enough. When it arrived at my home I was truly shocked at the size. It is big....almost 400 pages....and full of wonderful recipes. The pictures alone are worth the price of the book. I actually think many of them would be perfect to frame. Really....they are that good!
So far I have made strawberry, raspberry, and blackberry jam using her methods. Delicious is an understatement!

Gotta run! I have more berries to pick and my pear tree is loaded too! Then there are the green beans! It is that time of year and I wouldn't have it any other way. It truly is "a berry good Summer"!

  1. Sounds like a lot of "good eating" in the future. I use to freeze, but never attempted to do any kind of canning. My Mother canned and I remember hearing the lids pop. The ones that did not "pop" was what we had to eat the next several days after canning day.:-D

  2. This book sounds like one that I'd enjoy. Thanks for telling us about it. Have a berry good time preserving the bounty of the season!

  3. Wow you get things earlier than us! :) My strawberries are still going, but too early here for Raspberries, etc., After a hot May and early June, it's now cooled off again and feels like Autumn instead of Summer. Also, we're still having way too much rain, so it's been kind of an odd growing season. For instance, in my vegetable garden - the plants themselves are gigantic but the vegetables are taking their time coming in because we just haven't had enough warm sunshine days.

    I'm hoping things change soon.

Enjoy your canning and berries. :)
