Messages The New/Old Way

In today's world of technology, the chalkboard seems to have become obsolete....at least in the classroom. However, in the land of decorating they are everywhere! Decorating magazines are full of French country kitchens and they all use the old school chalkboard as a message center. It is just presented in an updated way. Well as I mentioned in a previous post I now officially have the neutral / French country fever.

The kitchen message board seemed like a good place to start with my project list. A trip to a local discount store led to the discovery of an antiquing kit. Luckily they were on sale for only $5! Next came Home Depot for some chalkboard paint. My basement is full of old picture frames so that part was easy. A trip to my husband's workshop was the source for a board for the actual chalkboard.

After just a few hours of work (mostly just waiting for the paint to dry) my new message center was complete. OK, I did have a little help from my dear husband. :-) It cost very little and I have plenty of supplies left for some "French Country" presents.

I love my new message center. The only bad part is I had forgotten how messy chalk can be. It takes me back to those days of cleaning the erasers out on the playground and washing down the chalkboards on Friday afternoon. Come on now you remember it too! :-) Make a trip to your home improvement center and you too can create messages the "new/old way". Bon Appetite!

  3. You did good - pretty! I must be the only one left in blogland that has not made a chalk board yet.:D
I just do not have a good place for one right now. Yes - I do remember banging the erasers together, and wiping down the boards. :-D
    Enjoy your weekend.

  4. I too remember clapping the erasers together to get the dust out. Actually, that's better to me than the smell of dry erase markers, which I loath.
